Sticky Highlights ("the extension", "we", "us") is a Chrome browser extension that lets you highlight, annotate, and save passages of text on webpages. This policy explains what data the extension handles, how it is stored, and what control you have over it.
We have written this policy to describe exactly what the extension does today. If that changes — for example if we add an optional cloud sync feature — we will update this policy first and tell you about it inside the extension. See the "Future changes" section below for details.
When you select text on a webpage and choose to highlight it, the extension stores:
The extension also stores your own configuration choices, so they persist between browser sessions:
We do not collect any data beyond what is listed above. We do not collect your browsing history, your identity, analytics about your usage, or any data from websites you have not explicitly chosen to enable the extension on.
chrome.storage.local) only. There is no remote server, no account, and no login. Nothing is transmitted over the internet by the extension.
This means:
We do not, under any circumstance:
| Permission | Why it's needed |
|---|---|
storage | To save your highlights, notes, tags, and settings locally on your device. |
activeTab / tabs | To detect which page you're on, so the extension can show your highlights for that specific page and let you reopen the page from the side panel. |
host_permissions (all sites) | The extension's core function is letting you highlight and save text on any website you choose to read or research on, which requires the ability to run on any site. To limit exposure, the extension only activates on sites within your chosen scope — configurable as a whitelist of enabled sites or a blacklist of excluded sites in Settings. It never reads or modifies a page outside that scope, and is never active by default on first install. |
sidePanel | To display the panel where you browse, search, and manage your highlights. |
commands | To support the optional keyboard shortcuts for highlighting and opening the panel. |
alarms | Used internally to keep the extension responsive; not used to collect or transmit any data. |
The extension lets you export your highlights as Markdown, JSON, or CSV files. These files are generated and downloaded directly to your own device by your browser. We never see, receive, or have access to any exported file — the export happens entirely locally.
Sticky Highlights is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from children under 13.
We are considering adding an optional cloud sync feature in a future version, so that highlights can be backed up and accessed across devices. If and when this is introduced:
If we make changes to this policy, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
